A Brief Biography of Barb Bromley (a.k.a. artfulbarb)

artfulpassages.com - Barb Bromley a.k.a. artfulbarbBarbara Bromley is a published artist and instructor living in Holland, MI. She graduated from Michigan State University with a BA in Fine Arts and a teaching certificate. For more than thirty years she has refined her ability to artistically capture the character of her subjects, and to help others reach their artistic potential.

Her background includes years as a wildlife, figurative, landscape, and portrait artist. Her media comprises oils, watercolor, acrylic, pen and ink, pencil, pastel, and mixed media.

As an elementary teacher Barb enhanced her ability to connect with her subjects. She can identify the unique qualities of an individual, and portray those characteristics in her artwork.  Barb believes that emotion and passion are what creates the magic in an artistic portrait.

As an instructor Barbara uses a demonstration approach. She models a variety of watercolor (or other media) techniques, then encourages students to try them out. She emphasizes individual achievement and encourages a fun, interactive classroom atmosphere.

Barbara’s experience includes teaching all levels and ages in watercolor and drawing at Dabblers Hobbies in Concord, MA, coordination and leadership of weekly arts and craft lessons to a group of special-needs adults from the Minute Man ARC.  Barbara taught watercolor classes at the Weston Council on Aging, Sayre Christian Village, Wild Birds Unlimited, and the OLLI program at the University of Kentucky.

Barbara gives private and small-group lessons in her Holland, MI home studio.

  1. Hi Barb,
I googled your name just for fun. You are living in Holland at this stage!
    Cool.
As you probably know, I lived there long ago during four years of college at Hope. Wonderful town, but oh soooo cold in the winter. These days, I visit South Haven a lot, since two of my daughters, and all three of my grandchildren live there. My middle daughter, Annie, has been a teacher in the South Haven schools for many years.
I just retired last January, so I have time to connect with old friends. My wife, Harriet Squier, is also retired after 40 years as a primary care physician. We have a son together, Jon, who is a senior in college way out west at Reed in Portland, Oregon. He is a braniac.
It was good to see your picture here. You look happy.

  2. Barbara – I am writing answers to my son’s questions about my past. He wanted to know how I ended up painting with watercolors. I realize in writing for him how much your classes in Concord and Weston Massachusetts influenced me. I really appreciate all your help in getting started.

    sincerely,

    susie
